People Focus: Tom Joule

Having left school aged 16, Tom joined his father in selling country brand hats and waxed jackets at country fairs and events including Badminton and Burghley. It wasn’t until 1999 that the joules name began merchandising a small range of own brand clothing and in 2001 the first collection was complete employing just 16 staff. Tom now owns an impressive 43 own bran stores and concessions across the UK with the flagship store in my home town Market Harborough. Joule supply to over 700 independent stockists and concessions across the UK including high end stores John Lewis and Harrods with a further 600 across Europe and still sells at over 300 country shows. He has since expanded across the pond to North America and Canada and Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland. Joules.com was launched in 2002 and has become a vital part of the business. The brand has huge lifestyle appeal; turnover in the last financial year were £51.1 million (up from £35 million) with a net profit of £3.6 million (up from £1.2 million). The key driver behind this growth was down to the extension of the Joules range including the February launched of Baby Joule and in 2009 the launch of the women’s Boutique range. So why is it so successful and popular? Tom Joule himself puts it down to a wealth of equestrian heritage whilst broadening their appeal to the fashion forward.

'What Big Teeth You Have Grandma'

This weekend sees the release of Red Riding Hood, a dark and sexy twist on the traditional fable. Catherine Hardwicke directs the beautiful Amanda Seyfried, Shiloh Fernandez and the scrumptious Brit Max Irons in this Twilightesque mysterious fantasy horror. Valerie (Seyfried) falls for woodcutter Peter (Fernandez) scorned by the disapproval of her parents that she fall for someone with little social status; Henry (Irons) would be a much better choice. But before the inevitable hot mess of a love triangle develops the ‘big bad wolf’ swoops in and attacks the village killing Valerie’s sister and prompting the heroic entrance of Father Solomon (Gary Oldman). But the big question is ... who is the wolf?

Son of Sinead Cusack and Jeremy Irons, the actor/model Max Irons provides some real eye candy in this movie alongside Shiloh Fernandez. The Guildhall School of Music and Drama graduate has modelled for Burberry and Mango among others and his work in theatre (Friedrich Schiller’s ‘Wallenstein’) earned him a nomination for the prestigious Ian Charleson Award.
One love triangle I would love a part of !
Little Red Riding also provides some fashion inspiration: I'm thinking natural cotton shirts and of course the red hooded duffel coat but also in jewelry. Whilst browsing I came across Israeli/American designer Daphna Simons

Event Focus: Aintree 2011

The Good The Bad and the Down Right Ugly !
I was always under the impression that a day at the races, particularly ladies day, was a day of lady-like demure fashion spotting. And 2011 was no exception with the day an array of pure sophistication and erm crowning etiquette ...
Don't use up the UKs supply of fake tan in one go !

Don't indulge in the 'side-boob' trend !

Don't wear shoes you can't walk in !

Pretty girl but why come dressed as a buffet ?!

Classy - don't accessories with a plastic pint !

Don't opt for my flesh than fabric !

Don't compromise style over hemlines !

Don't try and coordinate !
It all looked like another episode of The Only Way Is Essex.

Label Focus: Holland and Cooper

Holland Cooper shakes off the frumpy labels attached with traditional tweed clothing. But, HC is anything but traditional offering a chic range of shooting and luxury fashions for both men and women featuring a range of fine quality British cashmere. It pushes the boundaries and removes the 'twee' from tweed. It is a unique blend of country and urban chic made with 100% funky British tweed with each garment individually hand-cut and finished to the highest of qualities.
It's well worth checking out their 2011 photoshoot !

In each season they feature two collections; tweed and sportswear. I personally prefer their tweed clothing as it offers a more sophisticated and smart look.

I also can't get enough of their adorable HC Binks dog wear collection!

I want a pug so badly !

As with many of the royals Tweed is a major part of any wardrobe. Tweed can be expensive but investing in a good quality, well made garment will last you a life time. A shooting jacket provides a more casual look but a tailored jacked gives the effortlessly classic look associated with Kate. Brands like Harris Tweed provide a more fashion forward approach to a British classic particularly their Liberty Freedom collection. Other brands include Joules, Holland & Cooper and a brand donned by Kate Middleton herself, Katherine Hooker.

Style Muse: Kate Middleton

The Royal wedding has been one of the most hotly discussed topics since the announcement of the engagement between Prince William and Kate Middleton. The soon-to-be Mrs. W Windsor, a former University of St. Andrews student, has taken centre stage on the cover of every British newspaper and magazine. The 29 year-old English rose has maintained a demure and sophisticated style and her classic, conservative fashions have been duplicated in copies throughout high street stores. She has featured in Vanity Fair’s international best dressed list and has been named Top Fashion Buzzword of the 2011 season.

coat whilst visiting Northern Ireland; the £650 trench later sold out !

to St Andrews University

This will most likely stay her most iconic look. This flattering,
long sleeved, royal blue Issa dress quickly sold out and inspired
 many highstreet copies.

Kate Middleton recycled her Katherine Hooker Shetland Herringbone
'Contrast Coat' for her first public appearance with Prince William.

The announcement of their engagement prompted the sell out of this Whistles blouse.
